A few weeks ago this match up between Texas and Oklahoma looked as if it would be one of the top games of the year, now after both teams took upset defeats, the teams are just trying to stay in the national picture.

Coming into the season both teams had national title hopes, but after both taking disappointing losses, they square off with the loser being knocked out of the national race.

Oklahoma had looked superb in starting the season undefeated, there was talk that the Sooners were one of the top three teams in the nation, joining USC and LSU, but after a stunning upset loss at Colorado, the Sooners will be trying to regain their form in Texas.

The Longhorns are in basically the same position as the Sooners in that they also started the season strong before being upset and dropping in the rankings.

The winner of this game will vault back into the national picture and begin looking toward the national title again, but for the loser, although they will not be out of the Big Twelve race, they certainly will be out of the running for the national crown.

Oklahoma is ranked #10 and Texas is ranked #19, Game time is set for 3:30 and the game will be shown nationally on ABC.

Rutgers is a team that knows plenty about what the South Florida Bulls are going through this season, because the Bulls are mirroring last years Scarlet Knights team.

South Florida has started this season undefeated and because of all the upsets so far, they have climbed all the way to #2 in the BCS standings, but to stay there, they must win in a hostile environment tonight in New Jersey.

Rutgers had their dreams of a national title dashed last year with a couple of late season losses, now they are looking to play spoiler to the Bulls and get themselves back into the Big East title race.

The Bulls are the best team in Florida, and that is a huge compliment in a state where Florida, Florida State, and Miami all have national titles to their credit.

South Florida also knows that since this is their first run at national prominence, that they must continue to impress and cannot afford to slip up, not even once.

Last week, they destroyed what was thought to be a decent football team in Central Florida, and now they will be playing in front of a national television audience in prime time against a very dangerous Scarlet Knights team.

This will be the first test for South Florida since upsetting Auburn early in the year, and a win should keep the Bulls at #2 for at least one more week.

ESPN will have coverage of the game starting at 7:30 tonight.

Illinois and Wisconsin

Illinois and Wisconsin Looking To Take Control of Big Ten

Wisconsin is often overlooked when it comes to the Big Ten conference. Michigan and Ohio State receive so much of the attention that often not much is left for any other team in the conference.

The Badgers are looking to change all of that this season, they are off to a 5-0 start, and a win today over Illinois would mean that Wisconsin is a team to be taken seriously in the Big Ten.

Illinois, on the other hand, has been a dreadful program in recent years, so they went out and hired former Florida Gator coach Ron Zook to take over the struggling program. In the few years since Zook has been there, he has transformed Illinois from a laughingstock in the league, to a potential contender.

All Zook has to do is win Saturday’s game against the Badgers and improve his teams record to 5-1 and all of the down years will be forgotten, and a new era will be born.

There is no bigger surprise in the Big Ten than Illinois, but in order to reach their goals and be considered a real threat in the conference, they will have to upset one of the best teams in the country.

Ohio State and Michigan are also undefeated in conference play, but with the Wolverines only standing at 3-2 overall, and the Buckeyes having not yet been tested, the Wisconsin-Illinois game could provide a strong measuring stick as to who is the favorite to win the Big Ten.

Game time is set for noon and the game will be broadcast live on ESPN.

The University of Miami has been entering through the famed smoke of the Orange Bowl for quite a long time, they have won numerous national championships and had even more memorable games at the site. Now they get to emerge from the smoke for possibly the last time at night when UM plays host to #20 Texas A&M tonight.

There have been hall of fame quarterback’s that have run through the smoke, there also have been Heisman trophy winners, and first round draft picks, many first round draft picks, but time does not stand still, and that means change for what players affectionately call The U.

Next season the Canes move their home from Coral Gables up to the stadium that occupies the Dolphins, where they will call home from now on.

It will be business as usual tonight as Miami tries to do what so many Miami teams from the past have done, knock off a ranked opponent that is supposed to be more talented than the Hurricanes.

The season has started slowly for the canes as they are 2-1, but their loss was a drubbing at the hands of #3 ranked Oklahoma, and their wins over two inferior teams in Marshall and FIU.

Game time for tonight’s game is set for 7:45 and it will be televised on ESPN. A national audience is something that has always inspired the Canes, and tonight they will once again be the center of the college football universe, even if it is only for one night. The team might be prepared, but if one thing is for certain, the Orange Bowl will be ready to rock, just as it has so many times before.

Hurricane Faithful

Hurricane Faithful Set To Say Goodbye To Record Holding Orange Bowl

The Orange Bowl in Miami is one of the most famed stadiums in sports history, and tonight, the Miami Hurricanes will say goodbye to it for one last time.

The Hurricanes have made the decision not to renovate the OB, as it is so affectionately called by Canes fans, and instead will make the move north to Dolphin Stadium starting next year.

But for one last time, the lights will come on, the band will play, and the smoke will be ignited, and Hurricane players of today and yesterday will join together in saying goodbye to this magical venue.

The stadium itself is a dump by today’s standards, but that does not tell the story of a place where Super Bowls were played, concerts were seen, and most recognizably, is the owner of the longest home winning streak in college football history.

What cannot be explained is why things happen as they do in this stadium, some events bordering on the supernatural, but what will be on clear display tonight, is a love affair that has developed between the old worn down building and anyone associated with Miami Hurricane football.

Many of the great former players and coaches will be on hand for what is sure to be a monumental send off, Jon Secada is singing the national anthem and there will be a special halftime event including players that have spanned many generations.

The night will belong to the Canes and their fans, and by the end of the night many tears will be shed, a sure sign by everybody involved as to what this iconic place meant to them individually.

But, it is as a group that they will say goodbye to one of the most cherished relationships in sports history, and for a stadium to have that effect on people, there will be no doubting its place in history.

Gambling History

Gambling History Leans Towards Favorites in NFL This Week

This week, gamblers took a major hit when the top twenty five got mangled in college football action, now the NFL must bail out these bettors before they sink.

The trends in sports gambling are relatively easy to find. When gamblers are up, they push and lose, and when they are down, they chase and lose, but on a week with so many upsets on Saturday, the trend says that the NFL should have the favorites cover this week.

Many games this week will be stressful for bettors around the World as Saturday’s college football action was potentially so disastrous that Sunday will be the last hope to recoup any lost money.

The games themselves lean towards the favorites covering, especially since it is rare that the upsets occur in both college and pros on the same weekend.

A couple games to keep an eye on are the Bears traveling to face the Lions on the road, with Chicago in a must win situation, the chances are good that they have a strong showing.

Green Bay plays against division rival Minnesota and with the Packers at 3-0 and the Vikings 1-2, a loss for Minnesota could be crippling in the divisional race.

Other games of importance this early in the season are Seattle at San Francisco, Tampa Bay at Carolina, Denver at Indy, and Kansas City at San Diego.

With such a troublesome day for gamblers on Saturday, the only logical idea would be that the favorites will have a better day on Sunday. If not, gambling losses could accumulate much quicker then in past years.
